Gamers rick here for game trade media. I’m with matt and we’re gonna gonna be talking to you today about ticket to ride by days of wonders. Thanks joining me.
Matt yeah. Thanks for having me on so tell us a little bit about taking a ride. It’s been around for a little bit yeah ticket ride came out in 2004.
Actually so it this is a sort of a one of the golden. One of the start of that golden age of board gaming that we’re in right now where these games came in and kind of revolutionized. The way that we play them okay ticket to ride you see in front of you we have the map of the united states and it’s all about building.
The best route. The best network to transport passengers you know from miami to seattle to portland to duluth minnesota. All these different places so this game is a great gateway game.
It gets people introduced to the modern board game. It is its ticket to ride one of the best things about ticket to ride is it’s incredibly easy to learn it’ll teach so it’s not something that you’re gonna put down the table be intimidated by be struggling with the rules. It’s fast to learn.
But there’s still a lot there to a lot of depth there to expand and to kind of improve your strategies as you play okay. So why don’t we go ahead. And do like a round of plays so everybody does how easy it is yes so we’ve we’ve done the setup here we’ve got some trained cars here that we can use.
We’ve also got a hand ourselves of four train cards each. And you may notice that there are these different routes here different colors so in order to take this route for example you need to have four blue cards. I’m highly unlikely that either of us was dealt four blue cards correct.
So we’re gonna have to kind of assemble those numbers by drafting cards out of this row. Here. We also got three tickets to each of us okay.
These tickets will say two points on the map. And the point value for connecting them so two very close places. Say helena and los angeles.
That is worth only eight points whereas if you make a long haul from los angeles to new york that’s worth 20 points. Wow okay so tickets are a way to kind of drive your your routes. In certain directions.
Okay. You don’t have to complete them. But the downside if you don’t is that you do lose the points.
You would have gained oh wow. So it maybe since certain cases. It’d be advantageous.
Or you just don’t have time to complete her out. But generally you’d like to keep them. So you can get rid of one of these you can keep them all if you think you’re you’re that good or you can get rid of one of these cards.
I am definitely going to get rid of one that i just don’t think i’m gonna complete okay and i don’t have this thing at the points keep the rest. I do i would i do that now as well yeah we can both do that right now. So i am gonna get rid of this one does that burn it seems impossible.
It’s worth pointing out we can get more of these later okay. I generally don’t recommend getting a whole bunch of them upfront because you may find yourself with just too much to do not enough time. Understood.
So now we can go ahead and start. I’ll go first because i wrote a train. Most recently oh dang it and you and your turn you have three options two of them are you gonna do most of the time you can take cards adam your hand you can play cards from your hand.
And then add trains to the board all right so i’m gonna just start off with the second option here i’m gonna add a train to the board okay because there is a little spot that i don’t want to lose that i need to connect to in okay. I’m going to go play one red card. Okay red would let me take a one length red route of which i think there are none.
However these grey routes here those are wild so you can play any color. If it’s multiple spots. You do need to play two of the same color or 4 4.
Or whatever. It is so i’m just gonna jump right. There one red card and down here.
It says playing one train is worth one point. So i get a point c. Worth pointing out that the more trains you play at once.
The more points. It is so six trains is worth a whopping 15 points. So you have the option play a card or take two trains okay you can take face up trains or you can take off the top of the deck.
The only exception is if you take a wild which are these locomotives face up that’s the only card you get when you draw one off the deck. Luckily then you’re fine go ahead and take two okay. But you can’t just take two wilds all right well i am going to draw off the deck.
And you said it can take two off the deck. You can take any combination of the row or the deck. So if you say oh i got a yellow.
I want another one you can go ahead and draw that now actually i’m just gonna play that’s a one or the other only or drugs. Okay yep. See.
And there you learned what you learned the rule. That’s probably the one thing that people get tripped up on the thing. I can do you know one of these things twice.
Then i would take another card yeah. I’m gonna take another card. There we go so turns are very very quick.
I’m gonna go ahead and just take a yellow will replace it with another card and i will take music mmm hmm giving him some more options and now we hit the three wilds. Okay means these all go away can we get new cards. Okay nice nice and that’s just fresh options yep that’s my turn mystic arts.
So my turn is i would like three red three reds and i’m gonna place them both period starting in the same highly contested area and then he’s gonna discard all right you get points. How many points do you get um was it three years three three is 404s three trades four four four points. If i’ll make it into the lead as i am want to do like that i’m going to just go fishing for new cards.
There is one other action you can do is the tickets action. Which i guess you probably don’t do very early in the game mm hmm. You can take two new tickets.
And you had to keep at least one of them okay. So if you take them you’re kind of gambling. You may late in the game.
Get two tickets that are impossible to do right you just lost yourself points. You also may get tickets that maybe both of them are already complete right and completing a ticket just means having an unbroken line of trades between the two cities. All right that makes sense all right so i i want to play so for grace.
I can play three of any card three of a the same color but any of them the same color. But any color so flexible. But not completely mmm see and also worth pointing out in a two player game.
Both of these doubles here are not up. And only one is okay that’s a way to kind of enable it to play more players. But not become too restrictive okay well the same time not being too free for us to not have some tough choices.
Hmm well. Then i will draw well it looks like i’m getting a pretty good selection of cards you always replace the card. And you can take the one that was just put out if you’d like i think music that same mechanic.
There also leads to plenty of moments where you draw this card yeah and then it turns at the top card was a was a wild that you could have just had right how’d you just drawn up. And done. And then your family laughs at you and christmas is really the speaking of christmas.
Oh. This is a great game to play for the holidays. Obviously.
But the family together to the table as what two to five players mm hmm. They just eaten up. Yeah.
Yeah. And you can you can teach it to an eight year old easily that’s awesome that’s another great aspect of this game. Especially considering the holidays are coming up it’s also got the kind of the geography component.
You know helping kids even who haven’t traveled a lot know yo hey. This is where a salt lake city is this is where helen is there’s a lot of cities. That are not you know.
It’s not all new york san francisco stuff like that that’s kind of a cool part of it as well thanks and i think it’s your turn. I just drew digit and i got some i don’t want to brag but i got some pretty amazing cards ah curses all right so i am going to play two white’s all right. Which puts us at two for two point two for two points.
The other fun thing about this game. So surely you’re playing with your with your family or your relatives over the holidays is if you think you know where someone’s headed or you can always jump out and try and get in their way. See you some friendly competition going so i’m gonna play two black cards huh yeah i feel like maybe he’s trying to go south.
So i’m gonna get two points of my own and see. If i threw a wrench into his play notes wow. See that was the worst.
But i think i’m just gonna play to read on my turn. Now and i might have guessed wrong either that or he’s now forced to make a detour through nashville music. Some resources here.
So the other nice thing your turns are so short. It doesn’t really provide a lot of time for for you know kids or anybody or grandpa to get really bored right you know waiting for it to come back around the table. You kind of always engaged watching what’s happening.
The board or drawing cards and it looks that it’s super fast i mean. He’s just drawn so it is my turn and with that in mind. I will take these two for ya.
I want those do something. But did you did i curse is i may have just messed myself up so i’m gonna take a wild that was face up mm hmm awesome for me downside. It is that is the only card.
I go and there we go it could have head of every while all right so i am going to play the three purple making all these small deals still ahead of me right now music. And i am done with that round so again. It’s super fast and you know i think this game would lend itself well to absolutely introducing a new player.
If you have a friend or a family member that has never played aboard absolute or hasn’t played a board game since monopoly yes. This is the game you want to sit down and play with them. It’s one of my number one games too to show what’s possible with you know modern board gaming to to someone who’s not familiar.
Yeah. I love it i took a wild so it’s back to you. And i’m gonna make a major move here ready.
Oh oh. You said one more card right. Yeah.
You seem very excited. That scares me a little bit so wild mm hmm wild wild wild head you this hard way wow orange okay never mind just gonna take a while counting is not my strong suit carry on all right so with that note. I’m going to play three 3s or four points.
Mm hmm. So i am not i am. I am.
Lagging well behind. But let’s try that again wild wild wild wild right now he’s thinking the same thing. No another wild in an orange.
Yeah straight across the midwest right out of duluth. Minnesota. Just a couple hours away to montana six trains go ahead and tell me how many points six trains gets me fifteen fifteen what in the first place so on that note that basically gives you the moves.
The structure of this game. Exactly. And that was super easy yep going on from here.
We just we keep doing the same thing you know eventually oh. I i think i’ve completed that get some more tickets right keep trying to kind of you know get in the way of my opponents. Try.
And you know come up with the best plan to get around you other people’s routes that kinda so as far as wing conditions go. When you complete a route that’s in your hand. Yes.
You’ve presented them no are at the end of the you know so you never know your opponent. Who has six tickets are they sitting on a mountain of negative points are they sitting on some big scores you also don’t know if that’s a eight point ticket or a 20 point ticket. Okay now the game will end when one of us is down to one two or zero.
Trains. Okay then everybody gets one more turn okay so you do want to keep an eye on your opponent’s train situation because if they start to run really low they’re playing a lot and you’re distorting cards you’re gonna fall behind right. So you kind of have that interplay going as well okay so based on what we did here i completed.
My su st marie to nashville ticket. Which is eight which would have been eight points 16 to 24 all right you did not completely otherwise completely other one. I was it was a salt lake to calgary.
Which would have been seven seven so you go down seven 24 yes whereas while i had that awesome train. I did not complete los angeles to new york surprise surprise nor los angeles to helena but as minus 29 points my lord trapping me well below zero so there you have it ticket to ride days of wonder. I was like this is gonna be yes too much for my brain to handle. But now that embarrassing it’s super simple and absolutely a game that can bring a family together at the table and have a good time so add this to your library.
